Square, Not “Square”
A co-worker learned to crochet and soon found herself perfecting that classic piece, the granny square. But she was worried about the name. “Is that ageist?” she asked.
“Let’s put it to the test,” I suggested.
Is it called “granny” because it’s considered boring or uncool for anyone who’s under a certain age? Nope. Check out the online tutorials—crocheters of all ages are enthusiasts.
Is there a different type of square with a younger-sounding name that’s touted as better somehow? Nope. There are variations on the theme, but they’re all called “granny.”
Sometimes a name is just a name.
