No Shame

An array of lotions and creams in plain white bottles

In one episode of “Your Friends and Neighbors,” starring that handsome Don Draper—I mean Jon Hamm—I noticed an interesting scene.

In a cosmetics store, a saleswoman tries to talk a customer—Sam—into buying more stuff, citing “fine lines” and “an age spot.” Sam finally shuts her up by sharing some shocking news (“my husband was just murdered”).

It’s wonderful that Sam never reacts as though the thought of aging is awful. But I’ve also written another line that could be slipped in, if Hollywood is listening. Suppose she were to say …

“What is this, age shaming?”
