Lifetime Achievement
This year the National Book Foundation presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to George Saunders, at 66.
Many of us who are about that age (I’m right behind ya, George) are hoping this number doesn’t actually represent a “lifetime”—and auspiciously, the person who introduced him did mention, “I don’t think he’s finished achieving.”
In Saunders’ acceptance speech, he agreed. He said he’ll cherish the honor to the end of his life, and that he plans to live to be 120, “writing better and better until my very last breath.”
Better and better, till the end. Now that’s lifetime achievement.
