Keeps You What?

An older man and a young child sharing a blue toy truck and a laugh

Recently, I had a chance to use the ABC method of bolstering positive age beliefs outlined by Becca Levy in her excellent book—Breaking the Age Code—when I heard someone say, “Laughter keeps you young.”

Awareness: Recognize the unconscious ageism that suggests not being young is a negative thing.

Blame: Place the culpability where it’s due, noting that this is a cultural falsehood we’re all taught, not one person’s dastardly gaff.

Challenge: Speak up, explaining the issue, and inviting people to find the adjectives that truly makes sense. Vibrant? Healthy? Happy?

This work isn’t always comfortable. But it’s important.
