It’s All Relative

Colorful children's books on a shelf

A children’s author told me she’d recently applied to a prose-poetry program at a well-known university, and she’s turning some of her narrative poems into illustrated books.

She’s also moving to another state, while continuing to share her knowledge about children’s literature with others. Clearly, she’s busy—and on the phone the other day, her son suggested she might want to slow down.

He used the words “at your age”—apparently because she’s almost 78. But there are centenarians in her family. So she told him, “Don’t use that phrase with me.”

“I might be just starting my fourth quarter.”
